While it is not a disease, the length of a dog's coat interests many. In Alaskan Malamute, long coats, are frowned upon, because they require an extreme amount of coat care, in addition to not be able to survive in arctic conditions due their coats being susceptible to ice balling and cold. The test detects the presence or absence of the recessive allele that results in long coats when present in two copies, and as such allows dogs with short coats that carry a hidden "long coat" allele to be detected. |
Color Testing
_From: http://www.vetdnacenter.com/canine-dna-coat-color.html
Certain coat color genotypes can be detected in various dog breeds, including the Alaskan Malamute. You can predict the colors of offspring by knowing what the parents carry. These are Aesthetic Tests (and which have NOTHING to do with health) available for the Alaskan Malamute: DNA - B Locus (brown / red); DNA - D Locus (dilute); DNA - E Locus (white); DNA - Long Coat Test. They do not cost much but can preserve or eliminate certain coat colors or traits. You can use these coat color and coat length DNA Tests to discover red, black, white, cream Alaskan Malamute colors. |
